Rose & Crown
Nayland Road
Great Horkesley
Colchester
Essex
I can’t put my finger on the moment that it all clicked into place. One evening, you’re having dinner with friends. The next, you’ve decided to all invest in a pub together. A pub in Essex. The Long Island of England! And a place I’ve only been once before, and nowhere near Colchester at that.
But so it was and so it was meant to be. I suppose it started with Rutton getting married and Ed cooking dinner for the boys during Rutton’s stag weekend somewhere in Suffolk. Ed, formerly of Pétrus, wanted to open his own place close to where he grew up. Rutton raved about Ed’s venison. And then I had Ed’s baby lamb chops and truffled mash at that dinner, and well, the deal was sealed.
Doing what I do–as a hobby, mind you–I know perhaps better than most that most new restaurants are ill-fated. But sometimes fate has other ideas, and having gotten to know Ed over the last few months, I feel very very good about the Rose & Crown and the very beautiful part of England that it’s in. I hope to make it out to Great Horkesley for Sunday lunch sometime in June. If you’re interested in joining, drop a comment down below and I will arrange a field trip! Colchester is exactly an hour from Liverpool Street, and then it’s about a 15 minute taxi ride from there.
Ah yes, and that other bit…this is officially my 750th blog post, if you can believe that. And with my six-year blogging anniversary coming up in June, well, that’s 125 posts per year or roughly one post every three days. Not so shabby, huh?

Good luck with the new venture!
Thanks, Patrick! Will send all the luck Ed's way….
I’d love to check out this pub, Krista, and surely it’s a better investment than anything else these days. And 750 posts is impressive!
Congrats!
Good luck from another Patrick. I know the area well and agree, it’s lovely
Would be fun to join you for a visit to the pub, please drop me an email if there’s space for me to join!
And congrats on the new venture!
Congratulations Krista – the pub looks idyllic! I am in for an Essex excursion for sure.
Fantastic! Best of luck! And would love to join for a field trip and finally get to see the face behind all those posts I have read…

Congrats Krista! Best of luck to you and your business partners. I’m always up for a trip to a country pub, so count me in if there’s space! 🙂
Congratulations – how exciting! Would love to check it out on the field trip!
WOw! So you’re now a pub gov’, eh? 🙂
congrats and let me know about the field trip in June, I rarely get out of London into the English countryside but when I do, I love it!
Krista, congratulations! Luckily this is ONLY your hobby! otherwise, how many posts would be out there on the blogosphere???
Been to Rose&Crown this past weekend, not as sunny as for the opening but the place was packed and the food was simply AMAZING! make sure not to miss the venison carpaccio with truffle oil, parmesan and rocket salad. The beef they have there, from the local farmer is spectacular, especially the rib-eye and the fillet. Ah! And leave some space for the desserts… (you’ve already experienced his skills as chef patissier at Petrus).
I am up for a lot more escapes to the English countryside! I’m loving it!
Congratulations on all counts. I can’t believe you have invested in a pub! How exciting is that. Good luck! I’d love to pay it a visit. Maybe we’ll cycle there!
I’d be interested in a field trip if there is space for some more!
Woo! Exciting. Definitely would love to visit.
