The Victim: Rutton
The Damage: 12 GBP each for beer and food
Date of Last Visit: Saturday, April 2
Rutton and I had plans to meet up at The Cow at 3, but as luck would have it, the kitchen at The Cow closed at 3 and I was operating very, very slowly for a Saturday. So I didn’t show up at Queensway Tube until 3:45 anyhow. Rutton was nice enough to come and pick me from Queensway in his car, right outside the TGI Fridays that the teenager inside of me desperately wants to visit for a mudslide and some nachos.
As always, I digress. The Westbourne was PACKED owing to the nice weather, and the crowd at The Cow looked a bit old and weathered. There was a new Mexican place up the street that we walked into, but they were playing very mellow music and it just didn’t feel right. So we hit Lucky 7 instead. I’d heard about this American Diner experience, but had never seen nor tried.
Now firstly, I was surprised. Lucky 7 is SMALL. 6 booths that fit 6. So you must share. Us people from my country are okay with this I think, but I wonder what impact this has had on L7’s overall business. They serve beer, which is unusual for an American diner, I think. And the menu is not that bible of "you name it, we’ve got it." Up on the board, they have burgers, salads, and sandwiches. Trying to redeem the last Chicken Cesar I ordered from a coffee shop by London Bridge, I went for the salad. Rutton ordered a cheeseburger with mushrooms and we debated whether getting a bacon cheeseburger is disgusting or not. I think it’s delicious, personally.
Our good arrived and I was immediately disappointed. The dressing was tasty, but the croutons were those fake little ones, and the chicken wasn’t very substantial. (Although moist and delicious.) Where are the anchovies? The Parmesan? The salad just seemed a bit basic.
Rutton’s burger looked great, although I was expecting smaller mushrooms, not the big mushroom that he got. His frites were also delicious, although I endeavored to eat as few as possible.
The music this entire time was fun and retro. The girl in the booth across from us was totally dancing in her seat the entire time. Service was friendly and quick, which I would hope is easy when there are only 6 tables, and the most you’ll ever have to service is 36 people at one time.
The Verdict: Good for a basic lunch.
