Kikuchi
14 Hanway Street
W1P 9DD
Date of Last Visit: Friday, February 19th
The Victim: Rutton
The Damage: Uh, £70 each. Blame the sake.
The Background: I haven't seen Rutton since the wedding. HIS wedding. So we make plans to meet up. I think maybe Roka, but something in me wants something less "all that." I just want sushi. I don't want pretty cocktails. I also want to give Rutton shit for putting me at the singles' table at his wedding. The single GIRLS' table. WTF?
The Arrival: Irasshaimase!!! Many times over. I've picked the right place. I'm shown our table and try to order a drink. There's a language barrier. I love Kikuchi already. Eventually, a beer arrives.
The Food: There was a lot of it, and I didn't take pictures of everything. I liked the tempura, even the mushrooms. (New readers: I generally don't like mushrooms. Or grapefruit. But luckily, there was no grapefruit here.) Was not the hugest fan of the chicken yakitori, but I think that's just because I don't really like working for my food. Loved the gomae. And the cod.
And then there was the sushi, and lovely it was. I went straight for the mackeral. Fresh. Generous cuts. Perfect.
Why I Came Here: Nuno told me to.
The Verdict: Loved, loved, loved Kikuchi. And they gave me a voucher for my next visit! You know I'm a sucker.

OOooh what an opportune time for this little review! the bf and I were thinking about where to have Japanese tonight and I suggested Kikuchi, but he was like… errr never knew anyone who went there but HAH now you’ve been and you like it! Will see if he will change his mind 🙂
Totally agree with you, kikuchi is a great spot for sushi when you don’t want the razzle-dazzle of Roka. Pricey but worth it.
Catty, check out Greedy Diva's more detailed recent post. I really loved it, mainly because it was so Japanese. Enjoy!
You don’t like grapefruit? How can you be a part-time Floridian?
Kikuchi sounds good – how much do you think your tab would be without all the sake? [I’m trying to gauge if I could just pop in to satisfy a weeknight sushi craving/not make an event of it.]
Sake cost us £55 for the bottle…I think Greedy Diva got out of Kikuchi for £45 total…
That voucher really works for them. I always go through my wallet, realise I got 1 week left on the voucher and make a booking to go back to Kikuchi again. Used to go to Kikuchi loads till I found Sushi-Say.
Hi Krista – How good is Kikuchi! I have been back a few times now – the sashimi was lovely, and the aubergine in sweet miso sauce was a surprise hit – it’s fantastic. When we’re on the beers or sake and feasting up, I find it hard to get away for less than £40 per head (I managed it once when eating light) but it’s worth it! Thanks for the mention of my post in your comments!
