The Victimes: Brian, Dan, Simone, Damien, Suneeta, and goodness but I forget who else.
Date of Last Visit: Sometime in October?
Brian is Irish and has lived in London in a previous life. We have quite a number of classmates in London who we rarely get to see for whatever reason. Luckily, Brian arranged a Dim Sum brunch for us. I love dim sum–it’s a surprise every time! And I still can’t forget that Dim Sum place I went to in Yangshuo (near Guilin) in China, where all the Dim Sum was shaped like little animals. So cute and so delicious. (Obviously, I am not a vegetarian.)
So we arrived and got a large table but it was just Brian and me so we felt awkward with the fairly agressive staff (who, btw, had let us sit down in the first place). "Yes, we swear, our friends are coming!" Being South American and European, they were late. Many moons late. So finally, Brian and I ordered. Treats galore! Well, I should clarify, we didn’t really order. We just said, "Commence," and the food just started piling up.
What I liked was that it (the food) WAS a surprise every time. What I didn’t like was that there was a brusque-ness to it. A little warmth by New World will go a long way. Everything was pretty tasty, but perhaps the one item not so much liked by the table (but liked by me) was the sticky rice is some sort of leaf packet. I thought this was delicious, but then again, I also think I was Chinese in a past life.
The Verdict: Go if you’re with a large group and it’s a Saturday and you don’t know who will take your party. With three floors, the New World will! And the large tables with the lazy susans are just perfect for sharing. The brusque-ness of the servers gives you something to talk about, and the surprise in each little dumpling also offers up a little bit of mystery.
