The Damage: Not much! Decently priced.
The Background: I don’t know why I keep forgetting to write about The Yard. Because you know, they make a good pizza.
The Gimmick: Pizza for four, served by the yard, with up to four toppings. So yes, one humongously large pizza that takes up pretty much the entire table. Personally, I think it could easily serve five. They also have pastas, but I’ve only ever had the pizza. I’ve also tried one of the starters, which is a fun assortment of little things to try like prociutto, different cheeses, hummous, etc.
The Service: Too busy for their own good. Looking everywhere but you. They do a brisk trade at lunchtime, so make sure you get your entire order in–you might even want to order two diet cokes at the same time like me–so that if you are hungry or thirsty later in your meal, you don’t need to worry about trying to get someone’s attention.
The Verdict: A very dependable place with good food, but spacey service.

I ate in the Yard, and asked them if they had any pizzas with anchovies on (nothing visible on the menu). No. So I asked if they could do some capers instead. “No, we don’t have any seafood”, I was told. This might have been down to an inexperienced waitress, but then again I think anywhere that serves a shredded Peking duck pizza is a travesty of a pizzeria.
The jugs of beer are a good idea though, saves having to re-order little bottles repeatedly throughout those long Friday afternoon lunches.
I ended up having a goat’s cheese pizza, which was bearable. It was rather sweet, and the cheese was bunged on top post-cooking, so it was more like an open sandwich on pizza. OK, but by no means great.
Go to G Franco’s a couple of minutes walk away instead, you won’t regret it — EC2A 4PX
Went there for dinner on a saturday night.
I really liked the idea of ordering pizza by the yard and having them served on a wooden board with a pizza cutter makes it that much more fun.
Prices are very reasonable and the pizza was very tasty with fresh ingredients.
The staff was very friendly and the service was good and fast.
Overall a great experience and very reasonably priced.
Will definitely go there again.
i went there last sunday, 12th october 2008 and thought the food was alright. the base is nothing special, i guess the square shape is just a gimmick to distract from a rather ordinary pizza.
BUT i was charged a £10 tip on my card by the waitress!!!! when i complained after she handed me the receipt, she called the manager who, rudely, told me that it was my fault i didn’t check the machine properly. i will never go back.
Would not go back- cut my mouth on a shard of glass in my pasta meal!
After going to Yard Restaurant and Bar for years, I guess I can partly agree with some of the comments above but there has been a major shift forward in the last 6 months. Food is consistently good and the staff are much more engaging and professional at the same time. I have never experienced the glass munching as mentioned above which I’m sure is just rubbish. Great place, great food and great location. 9 out of 10
