The 10 Most Delicious Things I Ate in 2009

2009 was full of surprises. (But isn't every year?) I thought I'd love my meal at Charlie Trotter's in Chicago. But no. It was pretty meh. I thought I'd love The Wolseley, but it was supremely average. I didn't think some organic little cafe in the back of an organic grocery store on Kingsland Road would get me salivating for their smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. Nor did I think I'd be willing to travel for cheesecake, but after one slice at the London Review of Books, boy am I a convert. And hey, that basement bar at Liberty has always seemed a little…desparate and damp to me. But a random bowl of soup there saw me falling in love.

So here you have it…the post that took me 23 days to write…the 10 most delicious things I ate in 2009 (20 seemed excessive)…
  1. Smoked salmon and scrambled eggs at Grocery Kitchen
  2. The parmesean anchovy toasts at Le Cafe Anglais
  3. The fishcakes at Gordon Ramsay Plane Food
  4. Beef and oyster pie at Hix Oyster and Chophouse
  5. The char kway teow at Sedap. (I've been back for this dish. A lot.)
  6. A bacon, egg and cheese sandwich for breakfast at the Billy Goat in Chicago
  7. Cheesecake at the London Review of Books Cakeshop
  8. The little prawns in their own little pots at L'ardoise in Paris
  9. The jar of quinoa, beetroot, smoked salmon and horseradish at The Shy Chef in Berlin. Horseradish is my new obsession.
  10. The langoustine and chablis soup at Liberty. In the basement Champagne bar.

Love your Grocery Kitchen find. Those unexpected simple pleasures at places no-one else is talking about are so often the best!

I am in love with Gordon Ramsay Plane Food. The mustard mash was awesome too, I had it with the fish cakes once.

I have so got to get to Cafe Anglais to try those toasts… yum!

For a year or so after T5 opened, the Plane Food fishcakes became an essential treat on frequent trips through Heathrow. Sadly, I came to the conclusion that the place had to hell in a handcart, but looking at the date of your original post (September?) I think the problem must be consistency. I’ve stopped visiting after two dreadful experiences – fishcakes which were oozing in grease, lacking in fish and, on the last occasion, so salty as to be inedible. A shame.

I had my doubts, but the fishcakes the day I visited were fantastic. Really.

Ahh, Sedap’s char koay teow is a constant reminder of the daily goodness I’m missing 10000 miles away…
