I’m sitting in one of those airport seafood bars — my guilty pleasure — when the waitress brings me two menus: an old school leather-bound menu book AND an iPad.
Part of me thought “iPad? Now that’s overkill.” I made my choices from the old school menu and then picked up the iPad out of curiosity and started flipping through the all-photo menu.
Well wait a second — the seafood bisque looked nothing like what I expected it to. And the rice noodle salad with seafood? It looked like everything I WANTED. BADLY. I changed my order. And ended up spending more money. So they got some ROI out of me for this.
Yes. You can call me a convert. iPad menus are cool. Very cool. Who’s with me?

@thewinesleuth thanks for rubbing it in that I haven’t got my deliver yet re: The iPad: Changing the way we order?….http://bit.ly/hStKhh
Isn’t this a high tech version of the pictures in the window or menu or even worse plastic mock ups of the dish ?
Next you will be able to order from the iPad without the need for the waiter which would be very sad.
For convenience food and take away – yes
For real restaurants – no thanks.
I think the difference is that the iPad can be so much more comprehensive than those tacky photos in the windows. AND the iPad is right there at your table…not in the window. I don’t know…I think it will work.
*Raises hand eagerly!!!*
We went to a place in LA in ’08 and they had these touch screens on the table which had menus and photos, you ordered and waitress didn’t have to even make it to your table. You also signed for your card on the tables! And there were games! Can you tell I was blown away…self confirmed geek.

They have that in JFK airport also. It’s a pretty cool idea! I think other restaurants will start catching on very soon.
Cant say that I’m surprised that technology is getting more involved, I feel for the waiter that is considered not competent enough to get an order correct and also you are less likely to tip.
I was at a restaurant in Oslo recently where they had the entire wine list on an iPad housed in a customised wooden box. You’re presented with a map, click on a country and drill down by region. A touch gimmicky maybe, but I thought it was very cool indeed.
With a wine list on an iPad, there’s so much more room for tasting notes. I can totally see it working. (Also, easier to update the list to reflect inventory.) Love it.
This reminds me of Wardour Street’s Inamo’s interactive table. Having an iPad seems like an overkill in this case. It’s still a bit unwieldy. An iPad2 on the other hand….
