One of my favorite entries in Art Loop Open. No idea who the artist is.
I've officially owned my Chicago condo for over a month now, although I don't think I've officially slept here for more than a month, given my trips to Israel and Chile. It's good to have a place to lay my head, but I wish there were two of me because being a new homeowner seems to require a lot of waiting around. (As I'm writing this, I'm still waiting for FedEx to arrive. I had no idea they delivered through to 8 p.m. I'm also getting my front door painted, and I've been instructed not to leave the flat until the paint dries. Good times, and no chance of tacos from the place down the road.)
I've had a little bit of time to get out and about and explore, although I'm trying (as always) not to eat too much these days. Here's where I've been, roughly in order of fabulousness of the experience.
- Morton's on Wacker Place for some fantastically charred steak and deliciously creamed spinach. I've never been much of a steak fan, but Morton's, I love you.
- The John Hancock building for the awesome views and pricey but fun cocktails at the Signature Lounge. It's totally a touristy thing to do, but I can't stop myself.
- Japonais for some scene-y sushi in an area I can only call Cabrini Green, but everyone else is calling the Near North Side. Nice cocktails. Good bar area.
- The rooftop of The Wit hotel for some cocktails, but sadly, no local beers.
- Rainbo Club in Ukranian Village for some good old PBR (Pabst Blue Ribbon). I think that's my last PBR for a while. Too gummy.
- Usagi Ya in Noble Square for some good, but not great, sushi and gomae. I love gomae, but the sesame sauce here was a bit too cloying.
- Pane Caldo in the Gold Coast for some remarkably unmemorable Italian food.
- Penny's Noodles in Wicker Park for a disappointing Thai red curry. The Diversey branch of this popular eatery used to be one of my favorites, but not anymore.
- Sabor Saveur in Ukranian Village for upscale Mexican with a French twist. Or at least, that's what it was supposed to be. I'll just call it weird and not very good.
- Swim Cafe for a disappointing breakfast burrito, gloopily covered with sour cream. Uggh.
You'll forgive me for not writing full reviews. Or, well, maybe you won't. I've got a lot going on at the moment!
P.S. Don't forget! I'm giving away a $75 voucher to Cookware.com! Read more and it could be yours!

Funny we haven’t bumped into each other in one of these places…but then again, we wouldn’t be able to know each other!

Ah, the only problem with Chicago is that some of the trendier neighborhoods do not have the great ethnic restaurants. For Thai, I would go to the row of thai restuarants in Lincoln Square. You get your pick of at least 3 different places from Sticky Rice, Spoon Thai, Opart Thai and others. (Spoon is a personal favorite). None of these three should disappoint. I hope you don’t think Penny’s is the only option in Chicago!
